What is chewing gum? Composition and
safety
Given the different consumer
preferences throughout Europe, there exists a wide variety
of chewing gum products, such as bubble gum, sugarfree
and sugar-containing gum, coated and uncoated gum, and
centre-filled gum, which appear in many different forms,
such as sticks, bars, chunks, balls, coins and dragees.
This variety of products results in the use of numerous
individualized formulas and manufacturing practices.
Chewing gum products have two
distinctive constituents; the first being the insoluble
gum base, which acts as a carrier and vehicle for the
second - the flavours and sweeteners. This combination
allows chewing gum, unlike any other food, to deliver
chewing pleasure and flavour sensation that is released
over an extended period of time. A
wide range of food ingredients and additives are necessary
in the production of various chewing gum and chewing
gum bases so that manufacturers can offer the widest
possible spectrum of product types to meet consumer
demand. Manufacturers ensure that only additives and
ingredients authorised by EU and national legislation
are used in chewing gum and that chewing gum products
comply with the appropriate legal purity and safety
regulations in place. |

Can chewing gum
contain allergenic substances and are they labelled?
Almost every natural substance
or ingredient may cause an allergic reaction to sensitive
consumers. The chewing gum industry is committed to providing
accurate and appropriate information through the labelling
on packs to all its customers.
All consumer packs have ingredients listed in accordance
with EU labelling legislation which is intended to enable
consumers to make informed decisions about the products
they choose. It is worth noting
that the EU has recently adopted new legislation which
makes it mandatory in all circumstances to label known
and scientifically documented allergenic substances
which are laid down in an allergenic substances list
or register which is under constant review by regulatory
authorities. |

Is
it true that chewing gum is good for
oral hygiene?
Dental caries is the eating
away (demineralisation) of tooth enamel by acid in the
mouth. Acid is produced by oral bacteria that ferment
carbohydrate foods (sugars and starches). If people practice
good dental health (maintaining oral hygiene, eating a
healthy diet), this stimulates saliva which neutralises
the acid and repairs the tooth's enamel. Tooth decay only
occurs if the repair process doesn't keep up with the
demineralisation process.
Sugar
free candies help prevent dental caries because they
are not fermentable by oral bacteria. So, they produce
no acid and cannot promote dental decay. Indeed, chewing
sugar free gum stimulates the production of saliva by
up to 10 times the normal unstimulated rate and may
thus help prevent the formation of caries
Additions of various active ingredients,
i.e. fluoride, etc. may further enhance the positive
effect of chewing gum to increase oral hygiene and preserve
your teeth. |

Can chewing gum
contain animal ingredients?
Except for a limited number
of ingredients chewing gum does not generally contain
ingredients of animal origin.
Gum
bases manufactured by Gum Base Co. do not contain any
